I have first-hand experience with washing ceramic-coated cars as 1/5 of the people who drive into my car wash shop are ceramic-coated and PPF.

When it comes to maintaining the shine and protection of your car’s ceramic coating, using the right car wash soap is crucial. Not all car wash soaps are created equal, and some can even damage or strip away your car’s ceramic coating.

Best Practices for Washing Ceramic Coated Cars

Washing a ceramic-coated car can be a bit different from washing a regular car. If you are not sure what to do, you can book an appointment with us.

Step 1: Gather Your Supplies

Before you start washing your car, you need to gather all the necessary supplies. Here is a list of the supplies you will need:

  • Two buckets (one for soapy water and one for rinsing)
  • A high-quality car shampoo designed for ceramic coatings
  • A wash mitt or sponge made of microfiber or lamb’s wool
  • A foam gun or cannon (optional)
  • A drying towel made of microfiber or chamois

Step 2: Pre-Wash Your Car

Before you start washing your car, you should pre-wash it to remove any loose dirt and debris.

You can use a foam gun or cannon to apply a pH-neutral pre-wash foam to the surface of your car.

Not many people do this, but please let the foam sit for a few minutes to loosen the dirt, then rinse it off with a hose. This method is way more effective than direct soaping and rinsing.

Step 3: Wash Your Car

Once you have pre-washed your car, it’s time to fully wash it.

Fill one bucket with soapy water (use Chemical Guys Honeydew Snow) and the other bucket with clean water for rinsing.

Now, Dip your wash mitt or sponge into the soapy water and start washing your car from the top down. Use a gentle, circular motion to avoid scratches and swirl marks.

Rinse your wash mitt or sponge in the clean water bucket after each section of your car to avoid cross-contamination. Once you have washed your entire car, it’s time to rinse it off with a hose.

Step 4: Dry Your Car

After you have rinsed off your car, it’s time to dry it.

I recommend using a drying towel made of microfiber or chamois to dry your car.

Start at the top and work your way down, using a gentle patting motion to avoid scratches.

Expert Tip

Here are a few words from Jim who is an expert on the topic. He is also a cleaner at my Car Wash location.

To maintain your ceramic coating, please avoid using harsh chemicals and abrasives. I recommend removing bird droppings and sap. Regular washing with specialized shampoo and a SiO2 boost spray.

Breaking Down The Different Types Of Car Wash Soap For Ceramic Coating

A novice might think, that all car wash soaps are created equal but that’s not true.

Here are some different types of car wash soaps that are good for ceramic coatings:

  1. Ceramic Coating Car Wash Soaps: These car wash soaps are specifically designed to work with ceramic coatings. This means they are pH-neutral and won’t strip away the ceramic coating. Lithium Double Tap Car Wash and Torque Detail Ceramic Car Wash are a good option.
  2. Regular Car Wash Soaps: You can use them but you need to make sure that the soap you’re using is pH-neutral and doesn’t contain any harsh chemicals that can damage the ceramic coating. Adam’s Car Shampoo and Meguiar’s Gold Class Car Wash are my go-to for my car wash shop.
  3. Car Wash Soaps with Wax: I use this soap for my clients who want to protect their car’s ceramic coating by adding an extra layer of protection. They contain carnauba wax, which is a natural wax that provides a deep shine and protects against UV rays. Some of the popular car wash soaps with wax for ceramic coatings include Chemical Guys Mr. Pink and Griot’s Garage Car Wash.
  4. Foaming Car Wash Soaps: This will create a thick layer of foam that clings to your car’s surface, pulling dirt and grime away from the ceramic coating.
